Pretest Introduction
There is an online test (a 'pretest') that you must participate in before you sign up for DCAL research projects. The pretest consists of a number of multiple-choice and/or free-answer questions, and is divided into 7 sections. You must complete all sections in one sitting, as you are not allowed to carry on at another time from where you left off. When you are finished entering your responses, you will have a chance to review all your answers and make any changes.
Before you decide whether you would like your personal information to be added to our database or not, it is important for you to understand what kinds of questions we will ask you and what we will do with the data.
Please take time to read or watch the following information carefully and discuss it with others if you wish. Ask us, by sending an email to dcalresearchadmin@ucl.ac.uk, if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information.
Take time to decide whether or not you wish to take part. You can always come back to this page later.
In order to know if you qualify for any of our research projects, we will need to know some information about you.
The pretest (called a "pretest" because it comes before the studies that you may sign up for) asks questions about your family, background, education and language use so we can best determine which projects you would be suitable to participate in.
After you complete the pretest, you can then sign up for any DCAL study. You will only need to do the pretest once. The pretest consists of 7 pages and should take about 30 minutes to complete.
The pretest is part of the DCAL Participant Database which is a secure system. All data is collected solely for research purposes.
You will be identified to researchers by a numeric identity code, not by your name. Your information will not be disclosed to third parties, or outside of DCAL.
There are no risks associated with your inclusion in the database.
You do not have to be included in the database if you do not want to. If you decide to be included, you may withdraw at any time without having to give a reason.
All the data in the DCAL Participant Database is managed in compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998 (reference number Z6364106/2006/5/43)
You can ask at any time, (by sending an email to dcalresearchadmin@ucl.ac.uk) whether the database is still keeping personal data about you.
DCAL will provide you with a readable copy of data which is kept about you within 21 days of a written request without any charge. Contact DCAL for detailed instructions on how to submit a request and prove that you are the person who the data concerns.
You may challenge the data that is held and, where appropriate, you may have the data erased, changed, added to, or completed.
If you have any comments or concerns, please contact dcalresearchadmin@ucl.ac.uk.
If you wish to go further and complain about any aspect of the way you have been approached or treated, you should email the Chair of the UCL Committee on the Ethics of Non-NHS Human Research (gradschoolhead@ucl.ac.uk) or send a letter to: The Graduate School, North Cloisters, Wilkins Building, UCL, Gower Street, London, WC1E 6BT who will take the complaint forward as necessary.
You may print from your browser now if you have access to a printer. After completing the pretest, you may click on Human Subjects/Privacy Policy at the bottom of any page within the Online Participation system to access a version of this information again.
